Drop & down-tune without the flop: pick a tuning, hear each string, get tight gauges, or check the tension of any set.
Gauges are picked to land each string near your target tension at that scale length, the cure for floppy down-tuned strings. Big jumps? Re-check neck relief (truss rod) + intonation. Want your own exact strings? Switch to the Tension Calculator tab.
String tension = how hard the string pulls. Too low = floppy and buzzy; too high = stiff and hard to bend. 1. Pick your instrument, scale length, and tuning. 2. Select the closest string set, then edit any gauge to match your pack (the number printed on the envelope, e.g. .046). 3. Green = dialed in. Amber = act: go thicker if it feels floppy, go thinner (or use a longer scale) if it's stiff. Sweet spot: ~13–19 lb guitar, ~28–55 lb bass.
