Practice slow, ramp up. Set a riff's target BPM, dial back to 60–70%, play until locked, then nudge +5 BPM. Your hands learn the shape before the speed.
Tap from a recording. Hit Tap on the beat four times while a track plays to lock the BPM, then use it as your practice tempo.
Doom click for loud rooms. The low sub-boom cuts through when a regular click disappears into cab wash or cymbals. Try it with headphones too.
Subdivisions reveal feel. 1/8ths expose rushing/dragging that 1/4s hide. Triplet for shuffle grooves. 1/16 for technical runs and ghost-note accuracy.
Sync hardware with MIDI clock. Connect a USB MIDI interface, pick your drum machine or groovebox as the MIDI port, hit Start; it drives them in perfect lockstep. Works with DAWs in sync-slave mode too.
Odd times. 5/4 and 7/4 with a slow BPM and accent on beat 1. Count through until you feel the phrase length, not the individual beat. Try 7/4 at 60 BPM.
Tempo map = full rehearsal guide. Add every section (Intro, Verse, Chorus…) with its bar count and BPM, hit Play song, and follow along. Loop the whole thing for stamina runs.
